R-114

Summary

R-114 is a colorless and odorless CFC refrigerant that was completely banned from production by 1996 under the Montreal Protocol for depleting the ozone. R-114 is used in centrifugal chillers and is known for being used in the maritime industry or other applications where corrosion is more common. R-114 is typically stored in navy (dark blue) drums or containers.

Most Common Replacements:

R-124 (HCFC), being phased out in 2020 for the United states and other developed countries.

R-236fa (HFC), in discussions of potential phaseout.
